There are different pathways to becoming an Australian Citizen. 

 

Permanent Residents 

 

If you are an Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand Citizen, then you may be eligible to apply for Australian Citizenship under this pathway.  

 

It is noted that the definition of ‘eligible New Zealand Citizen’ must be interpreted correctly. This is because we New Zealand Citizens living in Australia may or may not be classified as an ‘eligible New Zealand Citizen” and if so, then you may wish look into another visa option. Generally, you must meet the Australian Residency requirement which is to have lived in Australia on a valid for the last 4 years, have been a permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen for the last 12 months and not outside of Australia for over 12 months in total in the past 4 years, including no more than 90 days in the last 12 months.

Children 16-17 years old may be exempted from proving same if applicants can show significant hardship and this must be evidenced. 

Children under 16 are exempted from meeting the general residency requirement, however must be permanent residents.

For applicants over 18, it is noted that the Australian Immigration has made provisions to be flexible with the general residence requirement. Exemptions apply in limited circumstances such as under specific limbs under ministerial discretion, or special residence requirement (for those working overseas or for particular organisations- but in very limited circumstances only). Generally, attaining Australian Citizenship is a three (3) step process.

​

1.   Applying for Citizenship - It is vital to have all documents prepared properly for approval 

2.   Once the application is approved, then applicants will be requested to attend an interview as well as sit for the Australian Citizenship Test 

3.   Applicants who passed the test will then be invited to attend the Australian Citizenship Ceremony

Permanent Residents 60 or Over

The criteria for permanent residents or eligible New Zealand Citizens are similar to the one above. The difference is that an applicant in this category must be 60 years of age or over. The process is similar to the standard pathway, however the benefit is that that applicant will not be required to sit for a test. 

 

Citizenship by Descent 

 

If you were born outside Australia and have a parent who was an Australian Citizens at the time you were born, then you may be eligible for this visa. 

 

Evidence of Australian Citizenship
